Used to be better

As much as I love duolingo I despise it in many ways. It used to be so much better and it used to encourage players to learn at there own pace without being frustrated. Now that you have added health to the app it has discouraged me and maybe others. I think users should be able to play to learn and not get discouraged when they make a mistake. Please remove the health!

High Valyrian??

ITS SO ANNOYING DOING THIS ON SAFARI PLEASE MAKE IT WORK ON THE APP THIS SUCKS

Very fun!

Very fun and easy to use! Highly recommend supplementing with Tiny Cards app.

Im disappointed

I hate the health update and adds. Add Czech!!!!!!

WHAT HAPPENED?!?!?

I dont know what happened, but I got on the app one day and all my progress was gone! I dont know if its a bug or what but please fix it. I love this app though so please do something so it doesnt happen to someone else. I got really far too?

Good but Voice Recognition Needs Work

Im learning quite a bit of Spanish. This program seems like it could be very effective. Im on Basics 2 but the problem is that it requires you to speak into the phone for some translations. About 90% of the time, Im right, but the program doesnt recognize my voice so I loose hearts. This glitch costs time and/or money. I suggest they fix it so you dont lose hearts on voice recognition exercises unless they greatly improve the program.

I can find High Valyrian

Its a great app, but a difference between it and the website is you can learn High Valyrian on the websits, and its annoying me because I cant the language on the app.

Bad at teaching - huge leaps

First lesson is for beginners- great. Tracking. Then lesson 2 also for beginners takes a massive leap and has you try to guess words it has never defined. Example: Im suppose to know that a waiter holding a medal dome is "its time to eat an apple". That is a huge leap of missing communication.

Dear Duolingo,

I was about 56% fluent in Spanish when I decided to join. When I got this app I was learning more Spanish & feeling more comfortable speaking it. But there are issues. This app was supposed to make learning a new language a fun experience, but having to review "Weak Words" when you dont need to strengthen them makes it a CHORE. Our "skills" do not disappear as fast as you think. And its impossible to take a break when you want to; if I dont practice for 2 days Ill lose 7 skills. Apparently I am now only 20% fluent. I spend so much time trying to convince Duolingo that I know a subject Ive already passed instead of using it to learn something new. Im either stuck in the same, boring, awful cycle or being pushed back. Not only is this app just basic repetition (which Im growing tired of) it doesnt even attempt to skillfully teach you. IT DOESNT TEACH. It corrects you but doesnt explain why you are wrong. You do not learn; you only become accustomed to certain phrases (and chances are you wont even use them anyway). How do I learn conjugations? Gender rules? When to use ser and estar? Past, present, & future tense? Im glad I joined this app having already known these things otherwise I wouldve been completely hopeless. Edit : In my earlier review I asked for a "Cant Listen Now" button. I am glad you finally added that option.

So dissapointed

Look, I know learning isnt free, but for no reason at all, I was forced to pay $7 to keep my 42 day status. The message said something lol "this is to keep the app free." But thats not exactly free, is it? I would much rather pay a fee at the front end, than be arbitrarily charge fees to keep my status. Unhappy consumer. And by the way, Pimsleur may be expensive, but it Works. Does Duo? I dont know. I can only learn 5 minutes a day until I can rebuild my health to play again tomorrow. Terrible way to do business, Duo. Awful. Shame on you.

Used to be the best app

Ill never understand why they dont give you the option to pay monthly to not deal with this health bs

Random practice

Love this app and love the new system that forces you to practice but I always have trouble choosing which one to practice, it would be amazing if there was a button that starts you on a random lesson, maybe even advantageously selected! Thank you for your dedication to a more communicative and understanding world!

Health Bar System.

Seriously this new health bar system is a real drag. It is extremely discouraging to language learners. The fact that you get penalized so harshly for making mistakes is insane. Also you should really diversify your answer pool. There have been times when Ive forgot to put "The" or switched around words and have lost a health bar. Again, those are beginner mistakes. Lastly, if youre going to give the "My answer was correct" option, shouldnt we not lose a bar because in fact, my answer was correct?

Used to be better

This app is great... but it seriously went downhill. I quit duolingo a while back, and decided to try it again. But then I noticed something terrible. They added a feature called "Health". Basically, if you get a question wrong, you lose health. And you have to do a practice lesson to add 1 more health, or wait about 4 hours. SERIOUSLY? I used to love learning spanish. And now its difficult.

Awesome

Helps a ton

Find an alternative

This used to be the best app. I would have paid by the course for it, or even per month. Instead you now are forced to pay through manipulative health system where early mistakes or basic learning are punished by steep prices to unlock the game. Now its unusable for me. All the flow is gone. Cant learn by waiting 5 hours for more health. And it just feels manipulative. Its basically FarmVille, but less entertaining. Ill go buy a paid app now. Would have been Duolingo if there was an option to pay up front for unlimited lessons. Since there isnt, well... bye!

Perspective

If you compare this app to Rosetta Stone, Duolingo cant be beat. This app is extremely affordable (free/ad supported) and provides a great learning experience. They are constantly improving the languages offered and working to improve the course quality.

Japanese

The Japanese module is a new feature, but the English translations were clearly written by a non-native speaker. Many translations are awkward and unnatural. Please have the translations proofread by a native English speaker.

Freeze ups.

The bugs are alive. Ive had to abort the dative lesson more than once. I hope whatever you did took care of that. Frustrating to lose credit because you cant continue a lesson.

The best

The best application to learn new languages!
